GIG NEWS: Manilla have been asked to play at the really rather fab, small-but-perfectly-formed Firegathering Festival in West Sussex in a couple of weeks. Firegathering "Aims to celebrate performing arts, minus the coporate sponsorship and commercial greed. We've cherry-picked some amazing bands that really encapsulate a top class festival vibe for a full weekend of guaranteed enjoyment. This is a community festival which focuses on experiences and we want YOU to come and join us!". Well you heard what they said!

Out today, the FREE compilation download (MP3 or FLAC) album Plug Me In: Inspired By Delia Derbyshire featuring 8 varied tracks inspired by the work of Delia Derbyshire, including a new Manilla track De La D.
Our take on the brief was to engage with the playful nature that characterised quite a lot of her work, and in particular her explorations with layered tape loops of often mundane everyday sounds to create new and alien soundscapes. These experiments were very much the precursor to the effect that cheap samplers had on hardcore and other bedroom-based dance music of the early 1990s. Consequently, we took it upon ourselves to mash up old school breaks, door bells and DD’s own electro-Elizabethan composition to create, if we must labour it with a genre, Olde Rave. So it’s Back to ’92 – that’s 1592. Enjoy!

Right now we're working on a track inspired by the electronic music pioneer and BBC Radiophonic Workshop stalwart Delia Derbyshire. This should be appearing on a forthcoming compilation being released by the new Myuzyk Netlabel - their site launched today.

Great fun playing Latitude. Performed live with a vocalist - the lovely Michelle - for the first time on a couple tunes. We recorded a chunk of our set and even have some video so we'll hopefully have something from the festival for you to listen/look at, in the fullness of time...
We managed to catch a selection of other stuff while we were there, the Festival takes place in a great setting and had a cool vibe - definitely one to watch. If we had any criticism it was we felt that, while we have nothing against guitar bands, musically it was just a little bit 'monocultural'. The Huw Stephens programmed Lake Stage seemed to be a nice exception to this!

28|06|06
More exciting gig news! Another festival gets the Manilla treatment... We'll be playing The Lake Stage @ the Latitude Festival on the 15th of July. "Probably the Summer's most intriguing new festival" - Time Out magazine

01|06|06
That exciting gig news we mentioned - we're playing the new Foundation Festival on the 2nd September alongside the likes of Fun Lovin' Criminals, Goldie Lookin' Chain, Coldcut, Kosheen, Scratch Perverts, Swami, Pharache Monch, Biosphere, Fennesz, Digitonal, Isan, Xela v Deaf Center, Distorted Minds, TC + MC Jakes, Mampi Swift, Fertile Ground, Babyhead, Marcia Blaine School for Girls, Ochre, Miles Tilmann, Monoceros, Stendec, Lazy Habits and many. many, many more including the 2 yet to be anounced headliners. Wow!

19|05|06
Pleased to say the 4 Piece EP has been getting continued support around the place - notably from Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens at BBC Radio1. In the event that you are personally Huw or Steve (you'll know if you are, don't worry) then... cheers! Thanks also to Marcelle van Hoof, Keith Downey, Tim 'love' Lee, Dom Servini, and no doubt various other people we don't know about, for other broad(and narrow)cast exposure.
Some gig news - next month, on Saturday 24th, we'll be playing Bakedbeats @ Shillibeers, London, N7. This is a Midsummer's all-dayer in a nice venue with a great line-up of bands and DJs. More details soon, along with some other exciting gig related business ;-)

23|08|05
Not enough lists on this site we think. So here's one - some recent vinyl purchases Simon Manilla has been particularly digging:
Dave Miller - Michells Raccolta. Bloody ace this, pretty sparse, glitchy, jazzy, dubby electronica. If you like Jen Jelineck we reckon you will like this.
V/A - Microsolutions to Megaproblems - very varied selection of quality electronica from Soul Jazz records. A surprisingly coherent ride for a 'best of our recent releases' type comp. Interestingly you can hear echoes of a lot of the other kind of musics you might more readily associate with Soul Jazz in here - reggae, punk-funk, early electro/disco and more. Btw what is with the glue on Soul Jazz record sleeves? They always seem to fall apart the moment you get them home...
L.Pierre - Touchpool. Simon only got round to picking this up recently. "Lovely" he says.
Manual - Azure Vista. Now availble on vinyl from Static Caravan. Very Cocteau-Twins-esque. If you like Ulrich Schnaus we reckon you will like this.
Jonny Trunk - The Inside Outside. Not new at all. Dumb fun for the most part. Mr Trunk we salute you!

04|08|05
Is it really a month since Otherground? Great gig - thanks to all who attended and took part!

30|05|05
